A team of scientists fromUniversity of Lille, of Imperial College London, CNRS, Inserm, University Hospital of Lille and Pasteur Institute of Lille has just made a surprising discovery: pancreatic aging does not follow a disordered decline, as previously thought, but rather constitutes a highly organized process linked to finely regulated epigenetic mechanisms (which modify gene activity without changing the DNA sequence). While the pancreas adapts over time to maintain insulin production and glycemic balance, in cases of established diabetes, epigenetics leads to major dysfunction of patients' pancreatic cells, which can worsen the disease. This study, led by the Dr. Amna Khamis and the Professor Philippe Froguel and published in Nature Communications, opens new perspectives for better understanding and also preventing diabetes.
